Taking a break from changing facades

By Jon Lowe | China Daily | Updated: 2016-03-25 08:05

The other day in my "up and coming area", I walked past yet another twee storefront. An oval sign announced it was "---Gallery". Beside it, a more commercial-looking sign said: "---Coffee".

There were three people inside; one was opening a laptop. I noticed a blackboard with chalk drawings of ice cream or fancy coffee (without prices). I pushed open the door. On a table inside was a notice informing me it was actually a private club; below it, a menu advertising European snacks, this time with prices ranging up to about HK$160 ($21). My eyes were drawn to shelves with assorted stuff - new purses (for sale?), a sweetie jar, a vinyl classical LP, boxes of cigars (fake?), sticky tape - a truly random selection.

Perhaps this was art? The service area adjacent seemed to be selling patisserie. I couldn't actually see or hear any coffee machines. There was no one behind the counter. The rest of the space was taken up by a lot of sort of office furniture.
