Item from March 23, 1985, in China Daily: Young residents in Beijing's Chaoyang district plant trees last Sunday.

About 250,000 Beijing residents, many with a spade or hoe in hand, flocked to new parks, the two newly built ring roads and suburban hills to do voluntary tree-planting. ... The municipal greening committee said that Beijing had plans to plant 600,000 trees this year, apart from laying lawns and growing flowers and other plants.

The capital has been holding its voluntary annual tree-planting drive for 35 years, with at least 200 million trees planted, according to the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Landscape and Forestry.
