Item from Feb 17, 1983, in China Daily: Construction of China's first nuclear power station is in full swing in East China's Zhejiang province. With a capacity of 300,000 kilowatts, it has been designed entirely by Chinese engineers.

A total of 130 million yuan has been invested in the technical transformation of Shanghai factories for production of equipment for China's first nuclear power station, Shanghai authorities said yesterday.

The country is gearing up the development of its nuclear power industry, according to a document on China's nuclear emergency preparedness released by the State Council Information Office in January.
