What does 1 yuan ($0.152) buy these days? In Beijing, it might be just two plastic bags at a supermarket.

But with the help of e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, that 1 yuan can also help to create a happier Chinese New Year for orphans in rural China.

The company has launched a crowdfunding project on its online marketplace Tmall in which for every yuan online shoppers donate, it and its partners will give a New Year gift package.
