China Daily | Updated: 2016-01-27 08:21

Item from Jan 27, 1984, in China Daily: Beijing boys gaze in delight at the variety of fireworks on display at the open market of Huashi, or flower fair, in Chongwenmen district. Some 600 million firecrackers of 150 different styles will be sold in Beijing for Spring Festival.

Fireworks are an integral part of Spring Festival, especially on the eve of the major holiday, when families enjoy reunion dinners and usher in the traditional new year.

The customary pyrotechnics are believed to frighten off evil spirits and to help with wishes for happiness and prosperity.
