Candidate accused of putting hit on rival

A man went on trial last week on charges he hired others to kill his rival after failing to win a village election in Guangzhou. Prosecutors said Xiao Yuchao paid 700,000 yuan ($106,395) for others to kill Deng Jiexing, the elected village head, who was found dead on Oct 14, 2014. Ten defendants including Xiao went on trial on Jan 19 for intentional homicide and illegal detention. A verdict will be announced later.
