Last year, I spent several months trying to find a primary school that would accept my 6-year-old son. However, without a Beijing hukou, or residency permit, I would have had to undertake a lot of very complicated procedures to register him at a school.

Even though I had all the necessary paperwork, the authorities still told me that my child didn't meet the required criteria.
