'Missing' bookseller turned himself in to police

By Xinhua | China Daily | Updated: 2016-01-19 07:55

Gui Minhai, a Hong Kong bookseller hyped as "missing" by overseas media, had already turned himself in to police on the Chinese mainland in October 2015, after fleeing more than 10 years ago while on probation for drunken driving.

"Turning myself in is a voluntary choice ... and has nothing to do with anybody else," Gui, a Swedish citizen and owner of Causeway Bay Books in Hong Kong, told Xinhua at a detention center on Wednesday.

"This is my responsibility. I do not want anyone or any institution to be involved or get in the way of my returning, nor do I want any malicious media hype.
