China Daily | Updated: 2016-01-19 07:55

Item from Jan 19, 1993, in China Daily: Employees of the China World Hotel work on a masterpiece for the Ice Sculpture Competition, held on Sunday night at the Kempinski Hotel, in the Beijing Lufthansa Center. It was designed to support Beijing's bid for the 2000 Olympic Games. Up to nine hotels in the capital took part in the event, which was sponsored by the China Food and Beverage Association.

Last year, Beijing, with co-host city Zhangjiakou in surrounding Hebei province, won the bid to hold the 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

With the success of the 2008 Beijing Olympics under its belt, that means the capital will be the only city in the world to stage both the Summer and Winter Games.
