The global picture
In many developed countries, laws and regulations have been adopted to improve the welfare of lab animals.
In 1966, the United States enacted the Animal Welfare Act, although it has been revised several times since. The AWA is a federal law, and regulates the treatment of animals in research, exhibition, transportation, and by dealers. It is one of many regulations and guidelines in the US related to the welfare of laboratory animals, including issues such as euthanasia and transportation.
After more than 100 years experience in the management of laboratory animals, the United Kingdom has passed many laws and regulations. In 2004, the National Center for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animal Research was established, and the country continues to invest in animal management. Nongovernmental organizations, such as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, also play an important role in promoting better welfare of laboratory animals.
