Groom gets old IOU as wedding gift

A bridegroom in Wuxi city received a surprising wedding gift from a former classmate: the IOU he had given his friend in lieu of a hongbao, or gift of money in a red envelope, four years earlier at the classmate's own wedding. The bridegroom, surnamed Li, and the classmate, surnamed Song, have been close friends since they attended university together. Li said he had to write the IOU when Song married because he could not afford a wedding gift after just graduating in 2011. Li said the IOUs offset each other.
