This Day, That Year

China Daily | Updated: 2016-01-04 07:54

Item from Jan 4, 1984, in China Daily: A household in the Niulanghe Brigade of Xiangyuan county in North China's Shanxi province is delighted at seeing an electric light in their home for the first time. The operation of the second generator in the county's power station has made electricity available to every corner of this coal-rich area.

Authorities across the country have been gearing up efforts to promote the use of energy-efficient LED lighting since 2011, as part of a national program to save energy and reduce carbon emissions, according to the National Development and Reform Commission, the country's top economic planning agency.

The program will help China save about 48,000 gigawatt hours and cut carbon emissions by 48 million metric tons every year, the commission said.
