New hydropower project underway

Construction of China's third-largest hydropower station began on Thursday. The Wudongde project, located on the Jinsha River, is the world's 7th largest in operation or under construction, according to the China Three Gorges Corp. The project has a designed capacity of 10.2 gigawatts and will be able to generate 38.9 billion kilowatt hours of electricity per year. The first unit is expected to start up in 2020.
