Item from Dec 21, 1995, in China Daily: Asia's largest department store, the Shanghai No 1 Yaohan Company's New Century Plaza, opened yesterday in the Pudong New Area.
The store is the first of its kind, set up jointly by the Yaohan International Group of Japan, a transnational company with more than 400 stores, and China's biggest business center, the Shanghai No 1 Department Store Joint-Stock Corporation.
Traditional hypermarkets and department stores in China continue to feel the chill of fewer customers, amid the growth of the e-commerce sector, according to industry analysts.
