Item from Dec 1, 1987, in China Daily: Renovations at Jiayuguan Pass, the west end of the Great Wall, are underway in Northeast China's Gansu province. The project is expected to be completed in 1990.

The Great Wall is one of China's most famous landmarks, attracting many visitors from home and abroad every year.

Starting from the 5th century BC, a series of massive defensive fortifications were constructed along China's northern borders. The walls that came to make up the historic structure stretched more than 21,000 kilometers, passing through 15 provinces and regions, according to the State Administration of Cultural Heritage.
