Item from Nov 27, 1990, in China Daily: Jiang Zemin, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said that the 1990s would be a crucial decade in building socialism with Chinese characteristics, and opening to the outside world was China's basic and long-term policy, which would remain unchanged.
Jiang made the remarks at a celebration marking the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone.
In 1980, China's first special economic zone was established in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, to facilitate the country's opening-up.
