The "Face With Tears of Joy" emoji has been named "Word" of the Year by Oxford Dictionaries, amid the rising popularity of symbols used on smartphones and other communication devices.
"I often use these symbols when I'm chatting online; they help me end the conversation in a 'polite' way."
