China Daily | Updated: 2015-11-20 07:50

Item from Nov 20, 1992, in China Daily: Scientists at the University of Science and Technology for National Defense in Changsha, capital of Hunan province, work on software for the China-made Tianhe-2 supercomputer, which can do 1 billion calculations per second. The new machine passed State appraisal yesterday and the State Council sent a message of congratulations to those who helped create the fastest computer of the country.

China's Tianhe-2 supercomputer has retained its position as the world's most powerful system for the sixth consecutive time, according to a major biannual Top 500 list of supercomputers released earlier this week.

Tianhe-2, or Milky Way - 2, was developed by the National University of Defense Technology and deployed at the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province. It has held its "most powerful system" title since June 2013.
