Item from Nov 17, 1981, in China Daily: China dethroned Japan in Osaka on Monday by winning a down-to-the-wire battle, in the final round of the Third World Cup Women's Volleyball Tournament.

The Cup-clincher over a Japanese team that refused to admit defeat after being down two sets came on the heels of a seesaw five-set win over the United States on Sunday.

In seven matches played, the Chinese women were undefeated, giving up only four sets, two to the Japanese and two to the Americans.
