Leaders of US, UN praise nation's president for successful completion of historic election

The party of Aung San Suu Kyi has won a majority in Myanmar's parliament, the election commission said on Friday, giving it enough seats to elect its chosen candidate to the presidency when the new legislature convenes next year.

According to the updated election results, the National League for Democracy has so far won 238 out of 298 elected seats in the lower house and 110 out of 133 elected seats in the upper house. In addition, the NLD has won 401 out of 522 elected seats in the regional and state assemblies.
