Company's besieging of media outlet wrong

China Daily | Updated: 2015-11-13 07:54

DOZENS OF "UNIDENTIFIED PEOPLE" who claimed to be workers from Zhuoda Group, a real estate company in North China's Hebei province, besieged the Beijing offices of the new media company Wujie Media on Tuesday, and refused to leave until 12 hours later when police issued an ultimatum. Their intrusion is believed to have been connected with a recent report by Wujie, which questioned the unreasonably high yields of Zhuoda Group's financial management projects, suggesting they might constitute "illegal financing". Comments:

For all media outlets, old and new, it is their legal right to report on any misconduct by enterprises they uncover. True, they might make mistakes, and the accusation of "illegal financing" can be a disaster for any enterprise, which up to a point explains the incident at Wujie Media's offices.

However, it would have been a proper solution, in line with the rule of law, had Zhuoda resorted to legal means to respond to the media reports of "dirty business". The besieging of the media company's offices by supposed employees of the real estate company have only given rise to more uncertainty in the dispute.
