China Daily | Updated: 2015-10-30 07:43

Item from Oct 30, 1998, in China Daily: Thanks to the hunting ban and to the care of local people in the Xishuangbanna Dai autonomous prefecture of Southwest China's Yunnan province, the number of wild elephants has risen from 190 nearly two decades a go to 250 at present.

To protect the wild elephants, local people scatter salt along the streams that they frequently visit to keep track of the animals, which are attracted to the salt.

China has been stepping up efforts to protect wildlife at home and abroad in the past few decades.
