Polar spectacle lights up winter wonderland
For people who keep a bucket list and haven't yet viewed them, seeing the Northern Lights is probably on the list, and likely fairly high. One of the best places to see nature's awe-inspiring light shows is in Northern Finland.
Located almost entirely within the Arctic Circle, during the dark winter months from November to April, the Aurora Borealis is a frequent visitor. It is easy to travel to the best viewing area, where the scenery is both wild and beautiful. There are also many ski resorts and other tourist activities to enjoy in the area.
Local legend has it that the lights are sparks flying from a fire fox's tail as he runs across the fells, and watching them at night from an igloo under the starry sky you can easily imagine yourself transported back in time to a world of sky and forest spirits.
If you fancy a fire fox hunt, Finland's country site ThisisFINLAND (finland.fi) has been totally renewed to improve the user experience, especially for those accessing it on a mobile device.
The site has helpful information for those planning to visit the country, including real-time weather information, as well as content covering Finnish society, habits, people, culture and companies.
There is also information on studying and investing in Finland, and an archive of 2,000 country articles has been moved from the old site to the new.
The site is available in seven different languages - English, Russian, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese.
