Item from Oct 28, 1983, in China Daily: Victory salute ... the Chinese men's gymnastics team acknowledge the cheers of the audience at the World Gymnastics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. And the team had good reason to celebrate - by taking the gold medal they had deposed the Soviet Union as men's team champions.

The success was made even sweeter because this is the first time China has finished on top in an Olympic event.

Last weekend, the Chinese women's gymnastics team earned a berth at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games after finishing fourth at the World Championships qualification in Glasgow, Scotland.
