53,000 couples opt for 2nd child

About 53,000 couples in Beijing have applied to have a second child since the city changed its family policy in early 2014. Of the applicants, 48,392 were approved. Of the potential mothers, 57 percent were 31 to 35 years old. It is estimated that by 2019 the city, with a permanent population of more than 20 million, will grow by 270,000. Then the population will begin to decline.
