US slams Assad's 'Moscow welcome'

The White House issued a scathing attack on Moscow's "red carpet" welcome for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday, accusing Russian government of impeding progress toward a political transition. Assad met Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Tuesday and thanked his Russian counterpart for launching airstrikes against extremists, with both leaders also agreeing during talks that political steps must follow military operations.

Small child dies in road rage shooting

A four-year-old girl was fatally shot in the head while riding in a car with her father in New Mexico in what authorities called a road rage attack, US media reported. A suspect identified as Tony Torres, 32, has confessed to the shooting of Lilly Garcia on Tuesday, ABC News reported. An anonymous tip led to the arrest, police said on Wednesday.

Soldier runs amok, killing 5 colleagues

Five soldiers, including two junior officers, were killed and nine others injured when a fellow soldier opened fire during a Bible study inside a military installation in Basilan on Thursday, the military authorities said. The soldier, Tahiruddinn Taha, a gunner at the mortar section of Bravo Company of the Army's 64th Infantry Battalion, was shot by responding soldiers.
