'Blade runner' serves less than one year in jail

By Reuters in Pretoria, South Africa | China Daily | Updated: 2015-10-21 07:48

Oscar Pistorius, South Africa's double-amputee "Blade Runner", was released on parole on Monday after serving less than 12 months of his five-year sentence for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day in 2013.

The disgraced Paralympic gold medalist will spend the rest of his sentence under house arrest, but he still faces an appeal on Nov 3 by prosecutors who argue that he should have been convicted of murder, not culpable homicide.

Pistorius, 28, who was found guilty of the lesser charge after he fired four shots through a locked bathroom door, killing Steenkamp, will be confined to his uncle Arnold's home in a wealthy suburb of Pretoria.
