Still amazed after 50 years in news
A little over 50 years ago, fresh out of school with only a vague idea of what I wanted to be, I hopped on my bicycle at my home in an Oxford suburb, and rode down the hill to see if I could get a job as a cub reporter on my local newspaper, The Oxford Mail and Times.
Looking back, the sheer cheek of it still makes me blush. In answer to the question "why do you want to be a reporter?" I could only answer, "Er, well, I was good at English at school."
Amazingly, I got the job.
