China Daily | Updated: 2015-10-19 08:56

Item from Oct 19, 1983, in China Daily: Officers of the Chinese PLA Navy study a model of a submarine built by Italy when they visited the first international naval and electronic technology fair held in China. The fair, attended by some 80 foreign firms from France, Italy, Britain, Federal Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the US, lasted five days in Shanghai.

China has been focusing on the development of its navy in recent years, covering areas such as coastal defense and greater responsibilities in the oceans, defense analysts said.

The country's first aircraft carrier, Liaoning, was commissioned by the PLA Navy in September 2012. In April, three cutting-edge nuclear-powered attack submarines were manufactured, according to State broadcaster China Central Television.
