Printed newspapers have gradually but steadily declined and mobile digital reading is rising, which can be seen at any street corner newsstand or in a Beijing subway car. In the 1990s, urban residents in the country still relied on printed newspapers as their major source of news and they bought newspapers from a news vendor. Now in major cities of the country such as Beijing, the number of street corner newsstands is declining. More people have turned to smartphones to read or play games. Last year, nearly 52 percent of Chinese consumers aged 18 and older used mobile smartphones to read books, magazines or newspapers, according to a report by the Chinese Academy of Press and Publication. With the number of smartphone users in China estimated at about 500 million and rising, the trend is seemingly irreversible.
