France expands airstrikes to Syria

France launched its first airstrikes in Syria to expand its military operations against Islamic State extremists, President Francois Hollande's office said on Sunday.

The office said that "France has hit Syria", based on information from French reconnaissance flights sent earlier this month. It didn't provide any further details.

France has been mounting airstrikes on IS targets in Iraq as part of the US-led coalition, but had resisted airstrikes in Syria.
