Item from Sept 28, 1998, in China Daily: Shanghai resident Qu Liefeng shows a mobile phone he obtained free from the Shanghai Long-Distance Telecommunications Bureau for being the city's millionth cellphone user. Almost one out of 10 local residents has a mobile phone, the highest rate among Chinese cities.

China is the world's largest cellphone market, with the number of phone account subscribers reaching about 1.3 billion by the end of last year, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

In Beijing, 193 mobile phones are owned by every 100 people on average, the highest among mainland cities.
