Item from Sept 25, 1991, in China Daily: The black-necked crane, with only 1,300 alive in the world, has been saved from the verge of extinction with artificial insemination in the Beijing Zoo.

Experts at the zoo have successfully bred about 30 black-necked cranes through artificial insemination since 1987.

The number of black-necked cranes in China has been growing in recent decades, following efforts to protect the birds through artificial insemination.
