This Day, That Year

China Daily | Updated: 2015-09-23 08:04

Item from Sept 23, 1983, in China Daily: 2.38 meters! A new world high jump record was set here yesterday when Zhu Jianhua of Shanghai sailed over the bar at 5:20 pm on his second attempt at the height in the first day of the track and field competitions of the Fifth National Games.

Zhu broke the old mark of 2.37 meters which he set himself only three months ago in Beijing. No sooner had the lanky hero landed than the capacity crowd of 30,000 at the Hong Kong Stadium burst into applause.

Chinese athletes have recently been clocking major track and field achievements.
