Old photos show joyful scenes marking the end of occupation
On April 17, the Zhijiang Dong autonomous region in Huaihua city, Hunan province, and the base of the Flying Tigers, announced an exhibition of color photos showing Japan's surrender in Zhijiang seven decades ago.
The photos were taken by Joe Day, a veteran of the American Volunteer Group, or "Flying Tigers", three squadrons of US pilots led by General Claire Chennault, which helped China fight the Japanese occupiers.
On Aug 21 1945, Japanese representatives flew to Zhijiang and signed the surrender document, marking the first time that Japan been defeated in a war with China.
Day recorded the precious, historic moments with his camera. In Nov last year, he donated 223 photos to the Zhijiang government, among which 32 show the surrender ceremony in Zhijiang.
The photos vividly show the whole event, and the celebrations and happiness of the people of Zhijiang in the wake of the signing ceremony.
