Item from Sept 9, 1990, in China Daily: Lianyungang, a port city in East China considered the "Asian Rotterdam," is speeding up preparations for the opening of the new Eurasian Continental Bridge.

The continental bridge, an international railway with its eastern terminal at Lianyungang and its western terminal at Rotterdam in the Netherlands, will be connected early next month when the Chinese section of the railway line links up with the Soviet railway system.

In 2013, President Xi Jinping proposed the Belt and Road Initiative, which refers to the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road initiatives, transport infrastructure projects linking Asia and Europe.
