The limitless flair of red square

With Tian'anmen Square in Beijing and Times Square in New York, Red Square in Moscow is one of the world's most well-known landmarks. And just as the Chinese and American landmarks are places of patriotism and pageantry, venues for parades marking national day or festivities ushering in the new year, Red Square is a place where a country recalls its proud history and great victories. But there is much more to Red Square than that. The UNESCO World Heritage Site showcases several world-famous buildings and landmarks, including: the Kremlin, the seat of government power; the tomb of Vladimir Lenin; one of the world's most beautiful churches, Saint Basil's Cathedral; and the largest department store in Eastern Europe, GUM. However, Red Square's splendour extends further than the grandeur of the events and landmarks it hosts to the exotic cavalcade of humanity - the rich and the poor, the ordinary and the extraordinary - that ventures across its cobble-stoned streets 365 days of the year.
