Ma Ke never thought athletics could bring so much happiness to children traumatized by the Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan province, in May 2008.

The magnitude-8.0 disaster killed nearly 90,000 people and left tens of thousands homeless. The horror of destruction was everywhere and left a lasting impression on Ma, a teacher from the Capital University of Physical Education and Sports in Beijing.

When he arrived in Wenchuan, a county of Sichuan, just a few days after the catastrophe, he could not believe what he was seeing. Houses had collapsed, roads were tangled cracks in the ground, trees had been felled, and the people were numb.
