Nation blessed with abundant organic products

China Daily | Updated: 2015-09-01 07:47

Because of its biodiversity Peru boasts a huge variety of natural produce

Blessed with 84 of the world's 117 ecological systems, Peru has a high biodiversity, and is one of the most important centers of development of an extraordinary variety of species and has one of the widest varieties of agricultural products in the world.

The country's natural conditions, coupled with its ancestral agricultural tradition, are the pillars of the current development of organic production. It has a supply that follows consumer trends in the major world markets, and is certified to international standards such as ISO, HACCP, TESCO, BRC. Its supply also meets standards of good agricultural practices, as well as certifications such as Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance, among others.

Some of the most recognized organic Peruvian products are coffee, bananas and cocoa, Andean grains (such as quinoa and amaranth), exotic fruits (aguaymanto, chirimoya, maracuya), and herbs.

Fisheries and aquaculture

The sea, rivers and lakes of Peru are home to a great variety of fish and other species, most notably anchovy, squid, scallops, prawns, mackerel, horse mackerel and bivalve mollusks, that are managed, harvested and grown under principles of sustainability and responsibility.

Peru is the world leader in the production of fishmeal and fish oil, which complement the production of frozen, canned and cured products for direct human consumption. Its frozen products include squid, scallops, shrimp, mahi mahi, squid, rainbow trout, among others.

On the northern coast, shrimp cultivation is carried out with a high level of technology, while all along the Peruvian coast the high productivity of the sea and the favorable environmental conditions make it possible to develop large centers of production for scallop. Likewise, in the clean waters of the Andes, there is widespread farming of trout, while in the Amazon the development of farming projects for native fish such as paiche is underway.
