Memories of days to come - perhaps

Here it is August not April that is the cruelest month for mixing memory and desire.

For, as has just been seen, it is in this month that the shaping of the present by the past and the fashioning of the future by the present become most apparent; with the anniversaries of historical catalysts given renewed potency as agents of change by the quest for transformed and transformative national identities.

The connections of continuity between those days and now are rapidly diminishing, as recollections of personal experience give way to the moments captured in grainy black and white photos and newsreel footage, and in the fading ink of newspaper reports.
