Item from Aug 27, 1999, in China Daily: The Jin Mao Tower, China's tallest building, opens for business for the first time tomorrow ... The 88-story Jin Mao Tower, soaring 420 meters into the sky, has been a landmark in Shanghai since it was completed last year, competing for glamour with the Oriental Pearl TV Tower amid the fast-changing Pudong skyline.

The $540 million post-modernist structure, the third-tallest in the world, was designed by the world-renowned architects Skidmore, Owings and Merrill of Chicago.

The number of supertall buildings, or skyscrapers taller than 300 meters, has boomed across the country in recent years.
