Item from Aug 26, 1985, in China Daily: These special passengers arrived at Beijing airport on Saturday, at the end of a historic journey from Britain.

The milu, known as Pere David Deer in the West, is a rare species on the verge of extinction. The 22 deer have returned to their native habitat of Beijing as a gift from the Marquis of Tavistock, of Woburn Abbey, England.

The deer have been extinct in the wild for more than 1,600 years and in China for nearly a century.
