This Day, That Year

China Daily | Updated: 2015-08-14 08:06

Item from Aug 14, 1982, in China Daily: Dockers at Qinhuangdao Harbor, one of China's largest harbors, are busy loading timber aboard the vessel. After upgrading, the harbor's handling capacity has increased many fold. It is part of China's ambitious plan to develop its offshore deepwater ports.

China's seaports now handle more than 200 million tons of cargo annually as a result of a nationwide harbor construction program in major port cities, according to Workers' Daily.

The cargo-handling capacity contrasts sharply with the early 1950s when the nation's seaports handled only 10 million tons a year, the paper said.
