Mercurial Gifford starred on field and in the booth

A National Football League championship with the New York Giants. A prestigious Emmy award as television's "outstanding sports personality" and induction in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Frank Gifford, as well known for his career as a player as for his role in the broadcast booth on Monday Night Football, America's premier weekly sporting event, died on Sunday. He was 84.

In a statement released by NBC News, Gifford's family said he died at his Connecticut home of natural causes. His wife, Kathie Lee Gifford, is a host for NBC's Today morning show.
