Item from Aug 12, 1983, in China Daily: Reminiscent of the grandeur of yore ... A cornerstone was laid on Wednesday in a project to restore Yuanmingyuan - Beijing's fabulous Old Summer Palace that was burned down by invading Anglo-French forces in 1860 - and eventually make it a heritage park ...

The whole project includes rebuilding 2,000 square meters of ancient structures and a 2,500-meter enclosure wall, dredging the original lake and repairing all culverts and roads.

Yuanmingyuan Park, opened in 1988 on the ruins of Beijing's Old Summer Palace, is a major attraction for visitors from home and abroad.
