Team to probe 2013 chemical attack

By Agencies at United Nations | China Daily | Updated: 2015-08-10 07:45

The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution creating an investigative team to determine to the "greatest extent feasible" who was responsible for the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

The resolution, passed on Friday after unusual cooperation between Russia and the United States, followed an earlier draft that only called for determining if chemical weapons, specifically chlorine gases, were used in a 2013 attack in Damascus.

The council said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, in coordination with The Hague-based Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, must send recommendations for the investigation within 20 days to the Security Council for its authorization.
