Item from Aug 10, 1993, in China Daily: Nearly 2,000 US-made Chevrolet vans and cars were delivered over the weekend to China at Tianjin port. General Motors staff members here display a banner saying "Thank you, China." These vans and cars were the first delivery on 4,000 cars China bought from General Motors this year.
Chinese carmakers have been gearing up for a larger share of the overseas market.
Fifteen major players, including Chongqing Lifan Group and Great Wall Motors Group, have set up 58 overseas plants and produced more than 200,000 vehicles in various regional markets, according to the Ministry of Commerce.
