This Day, That Year
Item from Aug 6, 1989, in China Daily: Two 20,000-ton berths at Yangpu harbor in the special economic zone of Hainan province are in their final stage of construction. The project is part of the larger effort being made by economic zone authorities to improve the climate for investment.
Many overseas businesspeople think Hainan is economically backward but worth investing in all the same because of its rich natural resources, preferential investment policies and potential market ... The province is already the site of about 700 enterprises with overseas investment and many businesspeople have come to look around the island in a bid to set up new enterprises.
The State Council has earmarked Hainan island to be developed into a global tourist destination in the next five years.
