Saudi-backed forces seize airport in sudden attack

By Reuters in Aden, Yemen | China Daily | Updated: 2015-07-16 07:52

Yemeni forces recaptured Aden's international airport and some city districts from Houthi militia fighters in a sudden advance after months of stalemate, the exiled government said.

Yemenis on social media reported celebrations in cities in the south of the country on Tuesday, where refugees from Aden have fled, and in other areas where local fighters are still battling the Houthis and army units loyal to the former president.

Houthi-run Maseera television reported that the Houthis had chosen to quit the city after "cleansing it of al-Qaida and Islamic State" in an apparent admission of the militia's retreat.
