Scooters aren't just for kids anymore. Urban Chinese are using them to whiz from place to place, and the elderly are riding them to enhance their mobility. They're useful for breaking through traffic jams and zooming to public transportation hubs. It helps commuters save money they'd spend on cars or taxis. Some hospitals use them to accelerate efficiency of their staff. Most can be folded up and easily carried. Battery-operated scooters cost from 1,500-4,000 yuan ($240-645) and can go 20-40 kilometers if fully charged. Since they're not considered motor vehicles legally, they can only be used indoors or on enclosed community pathways. Riding them on motorways or bike lanes risks a 5-10 yuan fine.
